Future of Headlights

One constant thing about technology is that it continuously develops. We are able to witness all breakthroughs and determine how it could impact our lives. Headlight technology has improved over time and it presents us new possibilities.

Back in the 19th century, headlights were made from oil or acetylene. As we can see, it has improved since then. It has evolved to electric-powered headlights. In the present, we have three kinds of available (and affordable) headlights: Halogen, High Intensity Discharge (HID), and Light Emitting Diodes (LED).

In 1999, an article published by the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal states that Xenon or HID headlights were predicted to become the standard of the future. Back then, it was reported that Xenon headlights cost around $1,000. Presently, HIDs are known for its brightness, efficiency, and affordability.

While most recognize the changes or upgrades that could be beneficial to some, HID headlights still garner problems, despite it being praised for being the next headlight system installed in cars. Glare is the most common problem among motorists. As such, people may consider the switch from HID to LED, given it is more energy efficient and produces less glare.

LED or Light Emitting Diodes was also considered as the newest trend in headlights. Many praise the LED for its efficiency and its brightness. However, the LED is more expensive compared to HID, and could be one reason as to many would opt to buy the HID.

Even if the LED has presented itself on the market as a competitor for the HID, one new headlight system is considered more superior compared to existent ones. One of the latest breakthroughs are that of laser headlights. These headlights have been introduced back in 2014 on several BMW and Audi models. Critics review that Laser headlights will be much brighter than that of LED, approximately around hundred times more.

Car enthusiasts praise the laser being superior that of HID and LED lighting. Not only does it have exceptional brightness, it is also energy efficient. Its main downside is the price, as it comes at such a high cost.

The newest manufactured cars may have the advantage with the laser as installed stock. Car owners and fans alike await how lasers benefit their driving even further. For now, the public has the halogen, HID, and LED headlights for their use. Improvements do go a long way when it comes to technology, and it seems the future is brighter with the exciting new developments of headlights.

What is your take on the future of headlights? Will laser lights dominate the headlight scene once it’s available and more affordable for the public or will HID and LED still be the preferred choice?
